Wildwood Ranch Cat Rescue
of Central Florida

Wildwood Ranch mission is to end the suffering of domestic
and wild (feral) cats in Sumter counties due to homelessness and abandonment, misuse and misunderstanding.
We intervene in situations
that are critical to the safety of wild or feral cats and kittens through support of the TNR (Trap Neuter and Return) program.
We research and evaluate existing
animal intervention programs that threaten the lives of animals through practicing Kill programs
We help animals with people
problem through phone counseling and access to our working and updated resources
We do this by building relationships and networking with
other animal organizations and lobbying for the rights of animals at local government and fraternal organization meetings,
by using the media to express our beliefs and by setting a good example of humane treatment of all animals.
We find creative ways to find
good homes for felines that are abandoned, homeless and or unwanted due to a variety of circumstance.
Every animal is important to us and we
view every situation as a no kill solution.
Exotic Mixes - new this month
Who we Are:
We at Wildwood Ranch provide an
environment for cats that is as close to their natural habitat as possible. While
waiting for their
forever homes, cats get to be cats.
Our group of
concerned citizens assist shelters, rescues and animal welfare agencies rescuing
cats and dogs working together with these groups towards positive solutions to
the tragic problem of animal neglect, abandonment and euthanasia; promoting the
no kill attitude.
We are not a shelter and have limited capability to
shelter
animals. Our facility takes in
cats when room is available to foster before they are placed in loving homes.
Our safety fences from Purr-fect Fence and some free roaming area as well as
indoor places cats cat relax. We interact with the cats daily to evaluate them so
that they will be matched with appropriate adopters. We are unique in as much
as our fostered cats have open spaces and a home not cages to enjoy, as we
believe every moment in all living beings lives are precious.
Many
of our cats have permanent residence at the ranch because they are inadaptable,
have medical or unresolved behavioral issue or are just to old to make major
lifestyle changes but we strive to place all cats that are adoptable.
We
keep a balance at all times of cats coming in and going out to keep our numbers
small by taking an aggressive action to adopt our animals to loving homes. Our guidelines to adoption are very
strict to protect the lives of the animals we save.
We
are also active in educating the public in all aspects of cat care and issues
using tools such as the Internet, public appearances, radio, newspapers, and
newsletters. Our most effective
publicity tool is our public image of being a caring, reputable and devoted
group and our fifteen-year success of successful adoptions.

Special need cats: Bumper:
THE BLIND KITTEN WHO NEVER GIVES UP
|

|
Bumper, a four month old kitten was found by a pond sick and
blind. How she got there was not determined however, a nice lady took her home and had her seen by a vet. Due
to unfortunate circumstances the women had to move and was no longer able to care for the kitten. What was she to do?
She couldn't release her again to the pond area and she couldn't take her with her. So she did the next best thing;
try to find her a home. That is how she landed up at Wildwood Ranch Cat Rescue of Central Florida.

More Pictures Of Suzie Que
|

Suzy Que is a rescue from a parking lot in a neighborhood shopping center. Fortunate someone had
enough sense to bring her into the vet in the shopping center and the vet was compassionate enough to find her a safe cage
while they found a foster home to care for her.
After two days of
hiding in her carrier, Suzy Que made the big move to explore the kitty room and has been exploring since. She
has taken to her foster mom as her real mom and spends many hours kneeding on her as if she were her real mother.
She is recent on her shots and the vet was kind enough to offer a free spay and neuter for
her. The adoption fee is $25. Maybe she will be lucky for the second time and find a loving home. She is about three pounds
now and a very mellow kitten. Gets along with other cats and is affectionate without being to demanding. A real prize for
someone who wants a kitty companion for their existing cat.
I do not recommend
kittens be by themselves for long periods of time they need love and companionship and supervisiion like babies. Perhaps you
would like to adopt one of our other kitties for companionship for her. We offer a special price for two kittens going together.

Amelia took a flying jump of faith that morning her mother
abandoned her on a rooftop. She
safely landed on a pile of leaves
under an easement of the neighbors roof. Since then she and her sister are flying solo as her other
two sibling have landed in the hearts of two aviators. (See below sister Sally)
A flying cat that has the faith of a mustard seed will
make a wonderful addition to your home. She is gentle and friendly.
Loves to play with the other cats and kittens and catnip and sit on your
lap while watching TV. (No rooftops please)

Hershey
and Snicker
Both
kittens are Havana Brown Mixes. Snicker is also a Polydactyl or mitten or
Hemingway cat. What is unique about Snicker is that she has seven toes on
her front paws. They are loving lap cats and we would like to have them
go as a beautiful pair.

Sally took a flying dive from a house roof after her mother deposited her there, probably to avoid being eaten by a dog.
Well,
Mom never came back and I promised Sally and her litter mates a forever home. II managed to keep the promise for two of her
siblings but not for Sally and Amelia. (See Amelia above)
It would be a wonder day if Sally and Amelia
could be adopted together as they have shared such a trauma together. Both cats were bottle fed and have the attachment
towards people that usually kittens only have for their natural mothers.

Lexi & Sami The Abyssinian is one
of the oldest breeds of domesticated cat and we are delighted to have a pair
for adoption
Sometimes
called the “bunny cat” because of its ticked coloring (each strand of hair has
several colorings on each strand) is a large, oriental shaped cat with a
melodious voice who likes freedom, bonds with its owners, sometimes can be shy and
wearing of strangers and make great pets. Not to mention the fact
that you get to live with a thousand
year old
breed of cat that may at one time been related to the sacred cats of Egypt. And
whose beginning ancestry dated back to the saber tooth tiger. Now how awesome
is that.

Simba
Simba
|
Simba is a beautiful Siamese mix cat about two years old saved
from death row at animal control. She has lovely blue eyes and a disposition to match.
She
was determined to leave animal control the day I went to pick up some kittens and was crying at the top of her lungs which
probably saved her life.
Since she has settled in to her indoor outdoor safe cat quarter she has
not uttered a sound. In respect for saving her life she has been very considerate to all the other cats and kittens.
Simba when I first found her escaped any opportunity she could just to explore and came right
back. But I did not find her wondering a safe environment so fixed the hole in the fence. I believe Simba would
only be happy if she were allowed free access to the outside. Only safe envirnments please. The cat fence has
really worked out for all our cats. See our link to purr-fect fence

Meow! I'm
Gus (gray like the rat in Cinderella), a have typical tabby markings with the
tell tale “ M” on my forehead. I am son of Cinder, brother of Duke and Jaq and
foster brother of Pirate. The similarity of commonness, however, ends there, as
I am a very much unique and a special fellow in my personality, abilities and
talents.
I did not
always live in a magical land of bugs, leaves and trees and be a part of a
magical kingdom. You see I was
born in a cage and spent my early years confined until I was placed in a foster
home and was given so much space at first I was beside myself.
I have had
lots of training in leadership.
You see my adopted brother, Pirate, came to join us when he was smaller
than us and Mom took up to nursing him too but we did the rest of the care. You
see my bro, Pirate, lost his right eye soon after he was born and before he
joined us. I must admit I was a
bit hard on the little fellow considering I was three times his size. But I
felt I needed to train him up in the ways of survival of the cat world. We all must of done well as Pirate has
a new home and his missing eye does not seem to me a hindrance due partially to
my help in toughening him up.
I may not
turn into a coachman at a fairy mother’s flip of a wand and the magical words
of "Bibbity
Bobbity Boo” but I will become your handsome and kind Prince when you adopt men.
I am looking for a forever home
preferably where I can get some fresh air every day and have some feline
companionship. I am up the day on
age appropriate shots and will be fixed as soon as I catch up on the required
weight for neutering 4.5 lbs. Come
visit me at the castle at the Wildwood Ranch Cat Rescue of Wildwood Fl. Call first at 352 748 5260 as I need to
put my very best attitude.

My name is
Jaq son of Cinder, brother of Duke and Gus and foster brother ofPirate. I am an orange tabby who loves to play in my indoor-outdoor
enclosure with my cousins and brothers.
They call me the runt, whatever that means. My mom, Cinder, like me has
learned to share space, lull around in the sun, chase bugs and leaves and tell
cat tales of all sorts.
I did not
always live in a magical land of bugs, leaves and trees. I was born in a cage
and spent my early
years confined until I was placed in a foster home and was given so much space
at first I was beside myself.
I have had
lots of training being tender. You
see my adopted brother, Pirate, came to join us when he was smaller than us and
Mom took up to nursing him as well but we did the rest of the care. You see my
bro; Pirate lost his right eye soon after he was born and before he joined
us. Since I was more his size than
the big dumb brutes for brothers, most of the training rested on my paws.
I am
looking for a forever home preferably where I can get some fresh air every day
and have some feline companionship.
I am up the day on age appropriate shots and will be fixed as soon as I
catch up on the required weight for neutering 4.5 lbs. Come visit me at the Wildwood

Morton is a salt and pepper type of lad. He is simple, pleasant and dependable. He purrs the minute you pick him
up. He is the first to leave his pen in the morning and the last to go in at night. However, he is never willful
about his needs and wants.
The litter was abandoned in a box in front of a spay and neuter
clinic at age five weeks. It only took a week for Morton and his litter mates to be allowed freedom in their foster
home because they adjusted immediately to their environment and profusely objected to being confined in a pen. (probably due
to abandonment and confinement in a box)
If you adopt one of his sisters Pepper, Poppey or Heather
or his brother Nutmeg you will have double the joy and half the work as they will be company for one another.

Two strikes against this lovable kitten, Pepper, part
of a litter of five, which includes: One strike: her unknown human
did not have mom spayed; second strike: the litter were abandoned in a
cardboard box in front of a spay / neuter clinic.
Lucky the day they were found employees of the clinic had a
moment to call a rescue instead of animal control. Usually kittens left under such conditions land up in animal
control and more than likely put to sleep.
You and Pepper will have hit a home run if you choose her to
be a part of your happy home. You will be a double hitter if you allow Pepper
‘s sister, Poppy to join
you as well. The kitten loves to
play with her sisters and chase
leaves and bugs in the outside patio.
She loves to be held and petted will not jump out of your arms when
carrying her. She uses her litter
box and scratching post

Peter, Paul and Mary

|
Peter, Paul and Mary
Lovely bottle fed kittens. Bottle fed kittens imprint with humans and make lovely
pets. Sometime becoming more
docile than the normal everyday mother raised kitten. What is different about Peter is that he is a male calico.
almost 99.9 % of calico cats are female.
Probably more than you want to know. Genetics of a calico
A little calico kitten is just about as cute as a baby
animal can be. However, a calico cat is not actually a breed but rather a very
specific color characteristic. A "true" calico is a tri-color cat,
with its colors in distinct patches, not mixed as in a tortoiseshell cat.
However, there is more to a calico cat than just a mix of colors.
For instance, have you ever seen a male calico cat? Few
have, as a matter of fact, word has it that all calico cats are female. To
better understand this mystery, lets have a brief, very basic, review of
genetics.
Each mother cat's offspring will carry a pair of sex
chromosomes, XX or XY, the result of which will make the kitten either a girl
or a boy. The mother passes an X chromosome down to it's creation and the
father passes either an X or a Y. If the offspring receives the Y, it's genetic
composition will be XY and it will be a male.
However, color and other physical calico kitten
characteristics are tied specifically to the X or Y gene depending on the
specific circumstance. For a kitten to be born a calico it takes two X genes,
one carrying an orange characteristic and one carrying the non-orange
characteristic (usually black). And, if a cat has the XX combination of genes
it needs to be calico, then it would be a female, hence, why there is the
perception that a calico cat has to be a female.
However, as life would have it, you will, on very rare
occasion, run into a male calico cat. "But, how can this be?", you
ask. Well actually, it is possible, rare, but possible just the same, that a
genetic anomaly can occur where an offspring ends up with an extra sex
chromosome producing the combination XXY. The XX of the XXY meets the
requirement of the two X chromosomes needed to produce the calico cat
characteristic's color and the Y of the XXY produces the male sex. However,
male calico cats are usually sterile and do not reproduce.
So next time you see that cute little calico kitten,
remember there's more to that girl than "meet's the eye".
|
Heather started out in life abandoned in a box on the doorsteps
of a spay / neuter clinic.
Heather is a female, as all calico cats are. Now six weeks
old and a winner in more
ways than just beauty. She is friendly, happy and loving. A Grand new beginning for this special kitten would be a
loving forever home. Consider adopting
this lovely friendly kittens and adopt one of her “spice sister or brother” as
well . See Pepper, Poppy (black), Morton (salt and Pepper Tuxedo), Nutmeg (male
orange and white tabby)

Peggy Sue was abandoned in a field by her mother, probably scared away by a dog. When we found the two sisters
they were in poor shape. Her sister did not last the nigh and when Peggy Sue arrived at the rescue we immediately gave
her subcutaneous fluids, hand fed her and gave her lots of love. The poor baby was out in the fields, heaven knows how
long and judging by her stools was eating grass and leaves to stay alive. Just at four weeks old Peggy Sue was determined
to make it a go. she has been a wonderful kitten and is growing into a strong healthy cat. Now at six months she
is ready for a loving home.
Peggy is a medium length cat with a long bushy tail. She
needs regular brushing to keep looking fit and pretty.
